The second highest reason for teenage deaths is homicide. Teenage homicide has gone from the inner cities to suburbs. Homicide in teens has overall increased dramatically; many of the stories you read about homicide in the newspapers are committed by teens. Why?
Homicide victimization rates for teenagers and young adults increased while the rates for older age groups dramatically decreased. Although homicide rates have overall decreased, the homicide victimization rates for 14-17 year-olds increased almost 150% from 1985 to 1993. The homicide rates for 14 and under has only slightly increased which is to be good news. All these facts are scary but there is only one way to put it: the homicide in teens has shot up.
Everyone is wondering why, has the gone up, and you are saying this will never affect my son or daughter. Before, when there was an argument between teens there was a fistfight, now it is a gunfight. Many are blaming T.V and video games putting ideas in the children's heads. Cartoons are getting more violent, before kids watched educational T.V like Barney, now it is shows like Mech wars. Many blame the toys that kids are playing with, some say it is accessibility to guns and liquor. Who can you blame? What your child learns at a young age affects them as a teen or young adult.
