Used as one of the most torturous execution devices in history, the cross is now one of the most treasured symbols in Christian culture. Men and women alike wear crosses of silver, gold, platinum, and other precious metals, many encrusted with fine jewels around their necks, wrists, and dangling from their ears. I am sure that in Roman times, this would have been appalling. It would be the equivalent of our contemporary culture wearing miniature, jewel encrusted electric chairs around our necks.
But the cross, used now for home decor and fashion accessories, was one of the most feared and painful methods of execution during Roman times. Criminals were hung from the cross through nails through their hands and feet, to die slowly through suffocation.
