Plagio es la acci'n de copiar en lo sustancial obras ajenas, d'ndolas como propias. Desde el punto de vista legal, el plagio es una infracci'n del derecho de autor sobre una obra art'stica o intelectual de cualquier tipo, que se produce cuando se presenta una obra ajena como propia u original.

El p'rrafo anterior es una clara muestra de lo que se conoce como copia o plagio, pues no se citaron las fuentes de consulta de aquella definici'n. El panorama hubiera cambiado de haber parafraseado la definici'n de la siguiente manera:

Seg'n la definici'n del Diccionario de la Lengua Espa'ola, se conoce como plagio a la apropiaci'n de datos, escritos u obras de otro autor para hacerlas pasar como si fueran propias (Real Academia de la Lengua 571).

En varios pa'ses del mundo, incluido el nuestro, se considera al plagio como un delito, difiriendo 'nicamente en las sentencias que se le da. Para evitar caer en 'l, se deben tener en cuenta algunas estrategias clave como dar cr'dito a las ideas, opiniones y teor'as de otras personas; no tomar partido de alg'n hecho, estad'stico, gr'ficos o extractos que no son com'nmente conocidos; hacer un correcto parafraseo y citas de palabras escritas o enunciadas por otras personas (Garc'a y Klein 'Por qu' ocurre''), tal como se mostr' en el p'rrafo anterior.

Para reconocer un texto plagiado basta con notar el cambio en algunas palabras, frases, o en el orden de las oraciones originales, sin citar la fuente de los hechos o ideas. A continuaci'n se muestra un ejemplo comparativo:
