The northwest of Pakistan and the regions neighbouring Afghanistan, Khyber Pakhtunkwa (KP) and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), are affected by large scale internal displacements due to military operations and insurgency. In 2012, almost half a million people were displaced from FATA to KP, and since February 2013, an escalation in fighting has resulted in fresh displacement of a further 200,000 people. According to UNHCR, as of June 2013, 1.25 million people are displaced. 10% of them are staying in three camps (Jalozai, Togh Sarai and New Durrani) and 90 % in host communities. Many of the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) are not registered so the actual number may be even higher. In 2012, for the third year in a row, monsoon rains in Pakistan caused massive floods. Close to five million people were affected in Sindh, Baluchistan and Punjab provinces, many of whom were already reeling under the impact of previous floods. The people of Sindh in particular were severely impacted. Pre-existing high levels of malnutrition, coupled with deteriorating levels of food security and less access to medical care services, have further compromised the health and coping capacities of the most vulnerable communities. Data from UNICEF's 2012 programme indicate that 18% of 1.1 million children screened in Sindh were malnourished, out of which 5% were severely malnourished.
