Carbohydrates

Description: Carbohydrates are referred to as either sugars or starches and they provide energy for the body. There are 2 types of Carbohydrates are simple carbohydrates which are released energy quickly, and complex carbohydrates which are release energy at a slower rate.

Daily Intake: Carbohydrates should make up 40% - 50% of the daily intake.

Role in Body: Gives the body energy.

Foods That Contain Carbohydrates: Chocolate and candy (simple carbohydrates). Pasta, bread, rice, fruits (complex carbohydrates)

Fats

Description: Provide the most concentrated form of energy but are a more expensive source of energy than carbohydrates. Made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen but contain more oxygen than carbohydrates. There are 4 types of fat, trans-fat, saturated fat, polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats.

Daily Intake: Daily intake should consist of no more than 25% - 30% fat.

Role in Body: Maintain body temperature by providing insulation, cushions organs and bones and aids in the absorption of fat soluble vitamins.

Foods that Contain Fat: Butter, margarine, oils, cream, fatty meats, cheeses, and egg yolk.

Protein

Description: Proteins is the basic components of all body cells and is made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and some also contain sulfur, phosphorus, iron and iodine. Proteins are made up of 22 amino acids and there are 2 types of protein: Complete proteins- contain 9 of the amino acids that are essential to life. Incomplete proteins- contain any of the remaining thirteen amino acids and some of the nine essential amino acids.
