This is the religious holiday known as . Created thirty years ago by Dr. Maulana Karenga, brings a cultural message of pride and dignity to the Africans. The tradition, which began in America, provides an emotional period of bonding between the family, community, and culture.
Each year, is celebrated from December 26 to January 1. Its roots lie in the motherland of Africa during the first harvest celebrations from which it takes its designation. The name , evolved from the phrase 'matunda ya ' means 'first fruits' in Swahili, the chief language spoken throughout Africa. These celebrations date back to ancient Egypt, and are also found among large societies like the Zulu, and smaller tribes such as the Matebele and Thonga.
