Howard Roark's testimony at the Cortlandt trial seemed to be a way for Rand to make her 'ideal man' to end as a hero. His testimony and explanations are very convincing and even logical. However, his biggest error is revealed in this section of the story. The error was obviously letting Keating propose Roark's unaltered design so it could be constructed. Even though Roark knew that he would not be convincing to people, this conflicts with his individualistic and 'egotistic' ideals. Before this event, Roark's only persuasion for construction was merely 'as it was designed, with no alterations'. Roark did not even do this for the Cortlandt project, as he agreed to let Keating do it. When Keating gave into letting the building be altered, this greatly conflicted with what Roark had envisioned. He destroyed the building out of hatred for the alterations. It was almost as if he had been robbed, or if his main ideal was faced in front of a 'firing range'. He does not see it as his own failure at all. He does realize the mistake in allowing Keating to propose the project, but he was ignorant to the fact that proposing is just as important as the unique design of the building. In other words, he did not realize that allowing Keating to propose the project to be a threat to his individualistic ideals.
Roark's unnoticed failure greatly changes the logic of his testimony. He explains how the great scientists and thinkers were condemned for their new ideas. He is obviously paralleling this to the Cortlandt project. It is incredibly true that as the ideas endured criticism and condemnation, they were eventually seen as good and very useful. This is a perfect argument for all his buildings in general, but not for the Cortlandt project. The reason is that the Cortlandt project was no longer his own. This is true both legally as well as individualistic standards. Howard Roark was completely oblivious to the fact that his design risked being altered conformed to the ways of society. If Roark had done the whole process on his own (the design, and proposal) the building would probably not have been built, but if it had, it would have been his way. It would have been his. However, he completely gave ...
