Planning: Position Paper
In preparing to write a position paper, identify a controversial, debatable issue, figure out what your position is, and identify points of contention between your position and the opposing position on the topic.
1. Describe 2-3 controversial, debatable topics about which you are interested (not the ones you necessarily used in the discussion activity) AND briefly explain why your audience (students) might be interested.

2. Choose the issue that you most want to write about and explain why. Why is this issue important to you?
Gun control. I feel strongly about people being able to protect themselves from potential threats. And I think that a criminal would more likely think twice before going after another person if they knew that there was a possibility of that person having a gun as well. It is important to me because I was attacked before at gunpoint and I feel if I had a gun I would have been able to protect myself.
3. What is your position on the issue? Write a tentative thesis statement that includes your position.
Gun control isn't going to stop people from obtaining guns, they will get them illegally making it even harder to control.
