[UNIT 8 CASE STUDY 1 THE CASE OF THE MAN WITH THE SWOLLEN KIDNEYS AND & THE CASE OF THE THIRSTY WOMAN]

Explain the changes in homeostasis associated with kidney pathologies.

* The doctor has told Cindy that not only does Sam have a kidney infection, but she might possibly have other imbalances. Based on her symptoms, what imbalances does Sam already seem to have?

Blood work and a urinalysis have shown that Sam has a kidney infection in her left kidney. Doctors are concerned that Sam is malnourished and anemic. Her urine output is very low, she is dehydrated and has a low blood pressure.

* Sam will have a substance injected into her blood that will expose the physical aspects of her urinary system in an x-ray. This substance will move through her kidneys and be excreted as would normal urine. Please describe the pathway this substance would take traveling through the kidneys in the blood. The substance would act as normal urine would. The pathway of urine flow through the kidneys would begin with the nephron the functional unit, step two the glomerulus, step 3 bowman's capsule, step 4 proximal convoluted tubule, step 5 the loop of Henle, step 6 distal convoluted tubule, step 7 the collecting duct, step 8 the minor calyx, step 9 the major calyx, step 10 the renal pelvis, step 11 the ureter, step 12 the bladder, step 13 the urethra, and step 14 the urethral orifice.

* Once the substance referred to in question B has reached the functional unit of the kidney, what process must happen in order for the substance to appear in the urine? What structures will it pass in order to be excreted out of the kidneys? The dye travels through the bloodstream, is filtered out by the kidneys, and passes into the urine. The urine then flows into the tubes (ureters) that lead to the bladder.

* How the nephron select what gets filtered and what does stays behind in the blood plasma? Why might Sam's filtration system not be functioning properly? What might the doctors find in her urine to support your hypothesis? The nephron has three basic processes filtration, reabsorption, and secretion. Secretion is the selective process. Secretion is the removal of selected molecules from the blood and adds them to filtrate in the tubule lumen. The use of membrane proteins to move molecules across the tubule epithelium is what makes secretion a selective ...
